The Income Property Association of Kern today announced that the 2019 California Landlord’s Summit on Homelessness will be featured in a series of short films on homelessness, housing, and health. Emmy award winning documentary filmmaker Don Hardy is producing the series with funding from Kaiser Permanente and the assistance of national homelessness non-profit Community Solutions. The documentary will highlight the efforts to address  homelssness in three innovate communities across America.

Kern County was chosen for this piece because Community Solutions recognized the 2018 California Landlord’s Summit on Homelessness as a model for landlord outreach in finding housing for homeless individuals. “Through this summit, IPAK and it’s members are showing landlords across the country that demolishing stereotypes about homelessness can open up business opportunities,” said Eddie Turner, Strategy Lead for Community Solutions. Eddie will also be a headline speaker at CLSH.

The level of collaboration between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors in Kern County is unique. “We have an incredibly caring community here in Bakersfield, and I think that has really been shown by how many people are stepping up to become involved,” said Rebecca Moreno on behalf of the Kern County Homeless Collaborative.

According to IPAK President Mardi Sharples, landlords have a key role to play in ending homelessness. “It is natural for IPAK to be part of the Collaborative because strong communities and well supported tenants are key concerns for our landlord members,” she said. This documentary will help show other landlords and service providers that they can work together as allies in the goal of ending homelessness.
